How to Tell When a LiPO Battery is Bad
We recommend checking batteries for signs of damage before each use. Typically, a visual inspection can be the best leading indicator of a damaged LiPO battery. If you notice any of the below, you likely need to retire the battery immediately and take precautions for safe disposal:
- Battery looks "puffy". The outside packaging appears swollen and is beginning to look like a pillow
- Corners of battery are dented; this is typically the result of a drop or repeated drops
- The foil packaging has been punctured and the battery cells inside are exposed to, or could easily become exposed to the air
- Wire sheath or insulation has been stripped back and bare wire is visible at the base of the connector
- Connectors are becoming (very) hot to the touch after use. Connectors should never be hotter than the wires between the battery and connector
- Plastic battery case is cracked or seems to have been forced open and will not fully close
Use of damaged batteries can result in equipment damage, explosions and fire.
