Charging and Discharging Batteries

Charging and Discharging Batteries

Charging Safety

Under no circumstance, should you connect a red wire to a black wire. Doing this can result in a short circuit on the battery and could cause serious damage to the battery and bodily harm. When charging batteries, please adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. Charge your batteries in an environment that is around room temperature.

  2. Never charge “warm batteries.” After doing a full flight, the batteries will generally be warm to the touch. Please allow several minutes for the batteries to cool down before charging. This will help keep your batteries healthy for longer.

  3. Do not unplug the battery charger while batteries are still connected. Always disconnect batteries from the charger before unplugging the charger.

  4. Keep the batteries in the included fire resistant cases while charging, transporting, or storing.

  5. Maintain a fire extinguisher next to where you primarily store and charge the batteries.

  6. Charge your batteries in an environment that is removed from flammable material. For example, charging on top of a concrete surface, away from the wall is a generally well-suited environment for charging. In contrast, charging on a wood table is not recommended.

How to Charge Batteries

The chargers are pre-programmed and the settings should not need to be altered for the initial charging. Use the following steps to charge:

  1. Plug in power connectors from charger to batteries (red to red, black to black)

  2. Plug in the balance from charger to batteries wires (line up the red wires)

  3. Confirm that the charger screen is giving a reading for cells 1-6.

  4. Confirm that the cell voltages are within standard operating voltages (2.5-4.2V)

  5. Confirm that cell voltages are relatively balanced (within 0.5V)

  6. Hit the play button (the middle circle) to navigate to your option screen.

  7. Ensure that the charger settings match the picture to the right

  8. Select the “Start” button again to begin charging.

  9. The screen will turn orange and the batteries will begin charging. Charging a fully drained battery will take roughly 40 minutes.

  10. Once finished charging the charger will beep once and turn green. This means the battery charger has entered the balancing phase where it ensures that all individual cells within the battery are evenly charged. This phase should take no more than a few minutes.

  11. Once the balancing has been completed the charger will beep twice and the screen will turn blue. To finish charging press the play button and disconnect the batteries

  How to Discharge/Store Batteries

Batteries will need to be discharged/placed at a storage voltage in the instance of (a) they are fully charged but not going to be used for a period longer than 10 days or (b) the cells have become unbalanced.

  1. Follow steps 1-3 above the same as you would for charging the batteries

  1. Hit the play button (the middle circle) to navigate to the option screen

  2. Navigate to the "Task" setting at the top of the screen

  3. Select the "Storage" option

  4. Ensure charger settings match to the picture to the right

  5. Select the "Start" button to begin discharging battery

  6. Discharging the battery will take several hours to complete (depending on the initial

    charge of the battery)
